Meet Me, Meeta!

As a kid, I loved to draw, read, and watch animated movies and tv shows. I enjoyed drawing my favorite characters: Mickey Mouse, Lowly from The Busy World of Richard Scarry, and Meeko from Pocahontas. Some of my favorite books included the Hank the Cowdog series, A Cricket in Times Square, and The Phantom Tollbooth. And I have seen pretty much every Disney movie over a 100 times!
I realize now how much I have a love for anthropomorphic characters and how these stories and animations made a huge impact on me as a kid. This love led me on a journey to create one of my own, Bobbety.
Early in my childhood, my parents knew I was going to be an artist. Being born to Indian immigrant parents, it’s rare to be able to pursue the arts but I am so lucky to have such supportive parents. I wanted to be an animator for Disney but as I was getting older and focusing more on studying and getting good grades (I wasn't allowed to get below a B!), my drawing took a back seat. As high school was ending, I knew I wanted to do something creative but didn’t think animation was an option anymore.
That’s when I discovered graphic design. I was already messing around with Adobe Photoshop at home, creating collages of my favorite Bollywood actors and actresses, so why not? I took a leap and moved to San Francisco for art school. This new life fueled a passion I didn’t even know existed! I also met the most incredible people, many of whom have helped me on this journey of creating Bobbety.
Then work happened. Don’t get me wrong, it was very exciting at first. My first job out of college was working for Apple as the Package Design Assistant. I had a lot of fun working on the packaging team, enjoyed getting to see all the new iPhones before everyone else, and I even ran into Steve Jobs at the bread bar during lunch. But the long commute and even longer work hours took a huge toll on me. Got my first gray hair at 22! After Apple, I continued to work at other design agencies and in-house teams, thinking maybe these jobs would provide a passion for me. During the course of my career, I discovered two extremely important things. 1. Corporate office life is not for me. 2. Illustration would be become my lifelong passion.
Even though I didn't become an animator for Disney, I discovered early on that making my own illustration styles felt much more fulfilling. I spent hours improving my Illustrator skills and developing my style (Mary Blair being a huge inspiration!). I wanted to do more illustration in my graphic design work. More importantly, I wanted to illustrate a children’s book. I wanted to do so much more with this new skill set. But managers wouldn’t assign me those projects and no agent would take me on.
So, I decided to give myself my own opportunity and do all the things I want to do with design and illustration. I even found a way to bring all the things that I loved from my childhood together. Thus, Bobbety was born.
The Making of Bobbety

Even though I wanted to create something for kids, I didn't know where or how to begin. But then in 2021, I unexpectedly lost my dad, my Papaji. That day forever changed me. Some say grief is unexpressed love. And it is with this unexpressed love that fuels the heart of Bobbety.
I was determined to make changes in my life and start focusing on the things that bring me joy. So, I moved back home to California to be with my family and knew it was finally the right time to do my own thing. In December 2022, I made the decision to take a break from freelancing and fully invest in the creation of Bobbety. Fast forward to now, I created the magazine of my dreams and am ready to launch in 2025!
Working on this magazine has been such a joy and in so many ways cathartic, but the sadness of never being able to share this with Papaji lingers everyday. This magazine is dedicated to him and the wonderful childhood he gave my sisters and me. Have you seen the Bobbety with glasses? That’s my Papaji.
