Woooo! It’s time to experience Bobbeton’s very own thrilling roller coaster, The Bobbecoaster! In Issue N.06 A Wild Ride, we discover the science and history of roller coasters. The process of creating this issue was definitely a wild ride! I LOVE roller coasters, but understanding the physics and then illustrating those concepts was a challenge. Luckily, I work with an amazing team who made learning physics easy and fun to read. Thank you Andre!
Another joy of creating this magazine is seeing the knowledge that I learn and applying them to my real life. Just recently, my sister and I visited Disney California Adventure and went on one of our favorite rides: The Incredicoaster. As always, we were screaming with excitement as the ride was going but then it STOPPED.
It was only for a few seconds (but felt like forever) and when it finally started up again, we were moving at a much slower speed. As we were coming down the curved hill, the sensation felt as if we were going to fall off the track! But now I know from working on this issue that there wasn’t enough potential energy built up to create the thrilling kinetic energy that we usually experience during this particular point in the ride. Thanks to Bobbety, I finally understand physics! Next time you're at a theme park, bring along Bobbety and learn all about roller coasters.
Take a Peek Inside
We first dive into the science of gravity and how gravity plays a big part in the thrill of a roller coaster. Roller coasters do not have an engine like a car to make it move. A coaster climbs to the top of that first big hill using a cable. As it gets higher, the coaster is storing up energy for the rest of the trip.
When the coaster tips over the edge, gravity takes over, and whoooooosh! Bobbeties love that feeling when their bellies flip during roller coaster drops.
In order to understand the physics of roller coasters we need to understand the Laws of Motion:
First Law: Law of Inertia (ee-ner–shuh)
An object will stay still if it’s not moving, AND a moving object will continue moving unless something pushes or pulls it.
Second Law: Force = Mass × Acceleration
The harder you push something, the faster it goes — but heavier things need a bigger push.
Third Law: Every Action Has an Equal and Opposite Reaction
For every push, there's a push back in the opposite direction.
